One Way Ticket Home (single)

by James Dean Cotton

/

about

I started the lyrics for this song as I was packing to go home to Missouri to be with my dad during his last days. I didn't know how long I would be there, just that I'd be there to the end. And though I'd traveled a lot, I'd never bought a one way ticket. It felt so final.

I stayed two weeks. Saw dad through to the end. This song is dedicated to him.

lyrics

Packed up the suit, clean white shirt
Wingtip shoes, damn things still hurt
Hope it’s good enough to impress
The old man, who always said to do my best

It’s 4 AM and I got in the cab
The driver said, “The airport?” and I said, “Yeah”

Got a one way ticket home
Hard to say how long that I’ll be gone
Hope that you hold on
Got a one way ticket home
Hope that you don’t have to wait too long
I wish there was another way to go, on a
One way ticket home

Touched down hard on hallowed ground
Ain’t it funny the way things turn around?
You always planned to head back out West
But those chances just come round once at best

The southern sun was the color of persimmons in the sky
And setting as I pulled in to the drive

Got a one way ticket home
Hard to say how long that I’ll be gone
Hope that you hold on
Got a one way ticket home
Hope that you don’t have to wait too long
I wish there was another way to go
And a couple things I didn’t know, on a
One way ticket home

Hard to say the time that we got left
Maybe I got more, you got less
Caught myself remembering the summers long gone by
And just barely heard you say “It’s alright…”

“I got a one way ticket home”
Hard to say how long that I’ll be gone
Hope that you hold on
Got a one way ticket home
Hope that you don’t have to wait too long
I wish there was another way to go
And a couple things I didn’t know, got a
One Way Ticket Home
